President’s Message – FIVB Women’s World Championship

The FIVB World Championships have always been seen as the crème de la crème of the international Volleyball calendar, welcoming the best 24 teams in the world to one of the most popular competitions on the sporting calendar. And this year is no different with the FIVB Women’s World Championship returning to Japan for the second successive time and the fourth time overall in this, the 16th edition of the premier tournament for women’s Volleyball.

To host back-to-back tournaments, especially one that is as big and popular as a FIVB World Championship, is an enormous task and one that I am extremely appreciative to the Japan Volleyball Association for taking on.

As the oldest and most prestigious event in women’s Volleyball, the FIVB World Championship will bring together the world’s finest players from the world’s premium teams. It truly is the best of the best.

Ever since the first edition in 1952 in Moscow, the FIVB Women’s World Championship has provided plenty of thrills and spills with many stars and heroes created along the way, and I have little doubt that it will be the same in Japan.

Preparations for the competition have been running for months, and possibly years in the cases of some teams, and to get to the final of a World Championship is one of the greatest moments in any player’s career.

A total of 22 teams have been whittled down from the record-breaking numbers which entered qualification to join hosts Japan and defending champions Russia. Five cities will play host to matches, with Volleyball fever engulfing the whole of the country for the two week tournament. Fans have travelled from around the world to see their idols. All of it adds up to what is going to be one of the finest moments in international women’s Volleyball and for the FIVB.

Good luck to everyone involved and I hope that all players, coaches, staff and spectators alike have a memorable FIVB Women’s World Championship.

Mr. Jizhong Wei
FIVB President
